ELION 7-AXIS SCAR ASSESSMENT

ScarAxis: Seven-Axis Surgical Scar Assessment

We check how your scar looks, feels and moves. Seven simple views help identify what needs attention first.

THE SEVEN AXES

Seven ways to read a scar7 Axes

Seven assessment axes do not mean seven treatments. Care focuses on the features that matter for your scar.

Scar = [ A · C · D · S · T · R · F ]
01 ACTIVITY · A

Activity

Is the scar becoming redder or larger?

More detail

We look for recent increases in redness, size, firmness or itching and whether the scar is still changing or beginning to settle. This helps guide timing and treatment strength.

02 CONTOUR · C

Shape and contour

Is it raised, depressed or wider than before?

More detail

We distinguish raised, depressed, widened or stepped edges and tethering. Height and depth matter, but so does the way the scar meets the surrounding skin.

03 DYSCHROMIA · D

Color change

How does its color differ from the surrounding skin?

More detail

We separate redness, brown pigmentation, white or lighter areas, and mixed color change. Different causes of color change may call for different methods and timing.

04 SYMPTOMS · S

Symptoms

How much do pain, itching, burning or pulling bother you?

More detail

We ask about the frequency and intensity of pain, itching, tenderness, burning and pulling. Significant symptoms can change priorities even when the visible scar looks subtle.

05 TENSION · T

Tension and friction

Do movement and friction stretch or irritate the scar?

More detail

We assess forces that can stretch or irritate the scar, including joint movement, pulling along the jaw, chest or shoulder, and pressure from clothing or masks.

06 ANATOMIC RISK · R

Location-related risk

How do its location and nearby structures affect care?

More detail

We consider areas prone to keloids, frequently moving sites, skin thickness and nearby structures. A similar-looking scar may need a different approach in a different location.

07 FUNCTION · F

Effect on movement and daily life

Does the scar limit movement or daily activities?

More detail

We review limited movement, contracture, pain-related difficulty and anatomic distortion. When function is affected, surgical assessment or rehabilitation may take priority over cosmetic treatment.

Review progress every 3 sessions.

  1. Assess

Photos and an examination help set the first priority.

  2. Treat individually

Methods are selected for your needs; recovery is checked each visit.

  3. Review after 3 sessions

We compare progress and decide whether to continue, adjust or finish.

We review changes after 3 sessions and decide the next step. Total sessions, treatment methods and intervals depend on your condition and response.

How we assess and record
  1. Standardize photographs and basic information — We record photographs at a similar distance and lighting, along with when and why the scar formed, its location, previous treatment and symptoms.
  2. Create the seven-axis profile — Activity, contour, color change, symptoms, tension, location-related risk and functional impact are organized by score and type.
  3. Set priorities and treatment candidates — Tension care, vascular or pigment treatment, injections, fractional treatment, adhesion release or surgical assessment are considered in an appropriate order.
  4. Compare the same axes after treatment — Photographs and symptoms are reviewed again to identify what improved, what remains and what to focus on next.
Patent application and research

KOREAN PATENT APPLICATION PENDING

ScarAxisSeven-axis scar assessment system

ScarAxis records activity, contour, color change, symptoms, tension, location-related risk and functional impact to help organize treatment priorities and follow change over time.

Current status
Patent application pending in Korea; not yet granted
Seven assessment axes
Activity · Contour · Color change · Symptoms · Tension · Location-related risk · Functional impact
Assessment and recording method
Phenotype vector generation, risk-score calculation, candidate treatment-sequence output and before-and-after tracking comparison
Application title (English translation)
Computer-implemented method, apparatus, and non-transitory computer-readable recording medium for phenotype-based assessment of cutaneous scars and output of staged treatment-sequence information

RESEARCH

Connecting research features
to practical clinical language

Established scar tools such as the Vancouver Scar Scale and POSAS separate features such as vascularity, color, thickness, pliability and symptoms. ScarAxis also records tension, site-related risk and function because these can change practical treatment priorities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions about
ScarAxis

Does every scar require treatment on all seven axes?
No. The seven axes help identify which features stand out in the scar now. Treatment focuses on the axes that matter for the individual scar.
How does ScarAxis guide treatment choices?
We separate redness and thickness, color change, pain or itching, tension and tethering. This helps identify the first concern to address and the order in which treatments may be considered.
Can ScarAxis be used for an older surgical scar?
Yes. Regardless of when the scar formed, its current color, contour, symptoms, tethering and effect on movement can be reviewed during consultation.
Is ScarAxis a granted patent?
Not yet. A patent application related to the ScarAxis assessment system is pending in Korea. The application concerns an assessment and information-output framework that organizes seven scar features and records treatment priorities and changes over time.
