BURN SCARS & CONTRACTURES

Burn scars & contractures

For healed burn scars, we assess redness, thickness and surface texture separately from tightness or contracture that restricts movement. Appearance and difficulties with daily activities help set treatment goals and priorities.

01 / ASSESSMENT

What we assess

01

Color and surface

We distinguish redness, brown or pale areas, rough texture and the transition into surrounding skin. Stable wound healing is checked first.

02

Thickness and symptoms

We assess raised areas, firmness, flexibility, itching and pain. Previously grafted skin is examined alongside the surrounding skin.

03

Tightness and restricted movement

Movement of the neck, hands or joints helps distinguish a pulling sensation from contracture that affects function.

02 / TREATMENT PLAN

A plan matched to the scar

01

Vascular laser for redness

Vascular laser treatment such as Vbeam is considered for prominent vascular redness in healed scars. Skin color and scar thickness guide the treatment area.

02

Fractional treatment for texture

Rough or firm scars may be assessed for fractional laser treatment. Skin condition and thickness guide the device, depth and area, with recovery planning for redness, pigment changes and wound care.

03

Functional assessment for contracture

Restricted movement is assessed separately to determine whether surgery or rehabilitation is needed. Referral to burn, reconstructive or rehabilitation specialists may be advised.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Prepare for your consultation

  • Tell us when and where the burn occurred, how it healed, and about grafts or surgery. Earlier photographs and records can help.
  • Describe tightness, itching or pain and the everyday movements that are difficult.
  • Bring details of previous lasers, injections, pressure garments, splints, rehabilitation and medicines. Discuss changes to existing care with your treating team.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Questions, answered

Can an old burn scar be assessed?

Yes. We assess its current color, thickness, texture and tightness, setting separate goals for appearance and movement before planning care.

Is laser used for every burn scar that feels tight?

Skin stiffness must be distinguished from contracture that limits movement. Functional restriction may need surgical or rehabilitation assessment alongside consideration of laser treatment.

Can scar treatment start while the wound is still open?

This page covers healed burn scars. A recent burn, open wound, discharge, warmth or worsening pain requires burn or wound assessment first. Scar care is planned after healing has been checked.
